There is an aviation museum and learning center on the south side of LAX. They have lots of information about Mines Field, airlines and uniforms, and the National Air Races once held there. The docents are former aviation employees and they are enthusiastic and knowledgeable.

They have an active program of honoring aviators and they have amassed a great list of supporters. You can listen to live control tower voices and see international aircraft land and take off. They need more visibility and they could use your support. Go for a visit; it's worth your while. Ask them about the park where 'plane spotters' go to watch aircraft come and go.
