Dear Ron,
What a great surprise to get your letter (of Jan. 16th!) with its invitation to get together for several good reasons! Really sorry not to have called or written before this. Sounds like we both have the same problem: not enough hours in the day.
An historical accounting of your Dad's business is a must. Everyone who knew him, even briefly, was his friend and his gift of friendship was endless. He was provoked by misunderstandings many times and yet I never saw him lose his patience. His problem-solving was ingenious and his stories about solving difficult problems were fascinating to hear, usually accompanied by a demonstration or example. On top of all that, his superb craftsmanship was inspiring and made every observer want to get into it for the sheer joy of the work. Often thought how great it was that Ed had found his game, was willing to share it, and did it because he liked it. He'd tell you about staying up all night to meet a deadline but it never sounded like a complaint because he always wound up with a smile. He welcomed visitors and would talk while he worked but never said that he was too busy. His shop was a Mecca for designers, craftsmen, and enthusiasts who would trade the best stories and jokes in the business. All of us who knew him were grateful to the fates for that great privilege -- he gave his beautiful spirit to all of us.
We probably should talk on the 'phone to see what an eye-to-eye visit could produce. I'll have classes at Art Center on Tuesday and Thursday through the end of April and then I'll be out of there for good. If you'd like, give me a call here at home (818) xxx-xxxx and we'll take it from there. Really great to hear from you and look forward to getting together.
With warmest regards, Strother MacMinn
